Lancashire's RoadPeace Support Group

RoadPeace is the UK’s charity dedicated to supporting people bereaved and injured as a result of a road collision. The aims of RoadPeace run parallel to those of Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety as they both strive to raise awareness of the responsibilities of all road users, particularly drivers of vehicles, in order to bring about a reduction in road collisons.

Lancashire's RoadPeace Support Group was set up in February 2009, following on from a well attended memorial service held last November.

The group is being spearheaded by Maria Hodgson, who tragically lost both her husband and sister in road traffic collisions. She lost her husband 15 years ago when he was killed by a drunk driver on the A59. Then, in a very cruel blow, Maria lost her sister who was killed crossing a road in Turkey in 2007. RoadPeace has helped her come to terms with her losses, and in turn she has become involved in helping others bereaved through road crashes.

Maria said: “Road Traffic crashes have a devastating effect on people. It is the shock; it is just so sudden. One minute they are there – then they are gone. People that have been through this are often isolated with no one who understands how they are feeling. Talking to others, who have been through similar tragic experiences, makes an enormous difference. It certainly helps me and now I am helping others by bringing them together.”

The group aims to give families and friends who have lost their loved ones, a place to offer support to each other and is supported by agencies across the county. These include; Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service, Blackpool Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council.

A small and informal meeting for the victims of crashes on Lancashire’s roads is held every other month. Everyone is welcome and there is no membership fee.
