Primary school children have WoWed Blackpool with their enthusiasm for walking to school.
During the summer term, schools in Blackpool have been taking part in the Council’s Walk on Wednesday’s (WoW) scheme, designed to reduce car use, congestion and pollution.
This year children were asked to Go for Gold, as the campaign concentrated on the health benefits of walking to and from school.
Children who walked regularly were awarded with bronze, silver and gold certificates. Those who walked every week reached gold and were entered in a prize draw to win one of 30 free tickets to Blackpool’s Sandcastle water park.
Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Road Safety, said: “This year’s Walk on Wednesday’s campaign was a great success with over 500 children across Blackpool walking to school every week and reaching gold.
“The Council supports walk to school campaigns in the hope of encouraging children to think about greener forms of travel, to help keep them fit and to teach them road safety skills.
“We hope that all of the children who took part in the campaign will continue to walk regularly now that they have seen how fun and easy it can be.”
