Pupils were asked to come up with an eye-catching design to be included on a sign to encourage drivers to slow down to 20mph. The new limited speed zone will be implemented outside the school at the beginning of next year.
Nine year old Carys Williams won the competition with her design showing a snail with the innovative slogan ‘20 is plenty’.
Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member with responsibility for road safety, said: “The new 20mph zone will improve road safety around St Nicholas’ School by encouraging drivers to slow down.
“Involving the children in the new lower speed limit helps them learn the importance of limited speeds around busy areas and hopefully they will grow up to be more cautious on the roads”.
The new 20mph zone will be implemented as part of the improvement and expansion of St Nicholas’s Primary School.
Along with the new sign, Blackpool Council aim to implement bus cushions and speed tables to help to slow the traffic, as well as a new zebra crossing to help pupils and parents cross the road and a roundabout which will help manage school traffic.
