News : Free Cycle Training for Kids

Due to the overwhelming success of Blackpool Council’s Summer Cycling Schools, youngsters are once again being offered the chance to take part in a free two-day cycle training course.

Half term cycling schools are available for children aged nine to 16 during October. The courses teach youngsters how to cycle to the national standard, how to ride on the roads and cope with traffic conditions.

Two courses are available in October, at Arnold School on October 23 and 24 and at Boundary Primary School on October 30 and 31. The course is open to anyone between the ages of 9 and 16 and Blackpool residents can take part free of charge.

The course will run over two days from 10am until 3pm. Children should bring their own lunch and wear suitable clothing.   Each course is run by Blackpool Council’s qualified cycling instructors who are trained to the national standard. The courses are part of the Bikeability cycle training scheme, which is taught in schools across the country.

Places must be booked prior to the courses taking place and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Travel and Road Safety, said: “The cycling schools are an excellent way for young residents to learn to cycle and it gives them the chance to be taught in a supervised environment. They have already been very successful and I would sincerely encourage any parent wanting their child to learn to cycle safely to take up the free opportunity.”

To book a place please contact Blackpool Council’s Travel and Road Safety team on 01253 476182 or email roadsafety@blackpool.gov.uk.
