News : Going the Extra Mile in International Walk to School Month

School children in Blackpool are going the extra mile this October, walking to school and raising money for the Mayor’s charities.

Children across Blackpool will be joining millions from across the globe to celebrate International Walk to School Month throughout October.

But Blackpool youngsters will be leading the way, not only walking to school regularly to help the environment but also taking part in a mass sponsored walk to raise money for the Mayor’s charities, the North West Air Ambulance, Donna’s Dream House and Crime Stoppers.

Throughout October, Blackpool Council’s Travel and Road Safety team will be promoting International Walk to School Month in primary schools across Blackpool.

The month will culminate with a mass sponsored walk to school event on Wednesday 22 October when around 25 schools will take part, walking simultaneously to school.

Cllr Maxine Callow, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Regeneration said: “International walk to school month is a great way for children to learn about being green and healthy but also gives them the opportunity to be part of a global event which celebrates the many benefits of walking.

“We are delighted that so many schools will be taking part, not only in the sponsored walk to raise money for these good causes but in walking throughout the month. If more children and parents walk to school it will mean less congestion on the roads, less pollution and a reduction in dangerous school gate parking.”

International Walk to School Month will be officially launched on Wednesday 1 November with a walk to Stanley School from the Mere Pub.

During the month children will be encouraged to walk to and from school every day. Schools will be asked to record how many children walk each day and the winning class will awarded a prize donated by Blackpool Tower and Circus.

Blackpool Council regularly promotes walk to and from school campaigns in a bid to ease congestion on the roads and around the school gates and to encourage children to take regular exercise.
