News : Blackpool Introduces Junior Road Safety Officers

Some of Blackpool’s primary school children are helping to make their fellow pupils and teachers safer by becoming Blackpool’s very first Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO’s).

Blackpool Council’s Travel and Road Safety team have implemented a Junior Road Safety Officers scheme this year, allowing nominated pupils from Years 5 and 6 to become road safety ambassadors in their school and local community.

 

Junior Road Safety Officers help spread road safety and travel messages to pupils, teachers and parents at their school. This involves them designing and maintaining a road safety notice board, running competitions and speaking in assemblies at the school, encouraging pupils, parents and teachers to think about road safety.

 

13 primary schools in Blackpool have chosen to take part in the scheme with a total of 48 children becoming JRSO’s this year.

 

Travel and Road Safety Manager Carol Bracegirdle said: “Introducing Junior Road Safety Officers is part of Blackpool Council’s commitment to reducing child casualties on our roads.

 

“The number of children injured on Blackpool’s roads has been reduced considerably over the last few years, largely thanks to the work we do in schools. But last year there were still 104 children injured on Blackpool’s roads. JRSO’s can help to raise awareness of road safety with their peers and help to keep more young people safer in the future.”

 

Blackpool’s first ever Junior Road Safety Officers met for an induction at the Town Hall on Tuesday 14^th October where they met Road Safety Officers from the Council as well as fellow JRSO’s and learnt about their duties for the coming year.

 

The children received a JRSO pack containing information and advice, JRSO badges and stationery sets and a high-visibility jacket to aid them in their work.

 

The 13 schools taking part in the JRSO scheme are Anchorsholme, Arnold, Boundary, Devonshire, Hawes Side, Marton, Revoe, Roseacre, St Cuthbert’s, St Kentigerns, St Nicholas, Stanley and Westcliff.
